Global Day of Parents 2024 Theme: The Promise of Playful Parenting

Throughout June, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and its partners will champion expert advice and support for parents, covering a wide array of topics from the scientific benefits of play to engaging family activities. Recognizing the growing prevalence of online play, they will also offer parents comprehensive guides and detailed explanations to ensure that their children’s online experiences are safe and positive.

Global Day of Parents: History

Studies show that trauma and emotional wounds sustained during childhood significantly hinder a child’s development and outlook on life, posing a barrier to achieving the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goals. During the 1980’s, the United Nations began to focus on family-related issues, recognizing how the emotional and well-being of children significantly impacts broader spheres of development. On December 9, 1989, the General Assembly passed a resolution declaring 1994 as the International Year of the Family. Subsequently, in 1993, another resolution established May 15 as the International Day of Families.

On September 17, 2012, the United Nations with resolution A/RES/66/292 designated June 1 as Global Day of Parents. This observance recognizes that the family unit is integral to the social, emotional, and physical development of children, serving as the foundation for creating responsible and productive citizens.

This day emphasizes their selfless contributions and sacrifices they make to ensure the well-being and development of their children. Secondly, it promotes family unity. The observance fosters a greater understanding of the importance of family cohesion. Strong family bonds are crucial for providing a safe and nurturing environment where children can thrive.
