Dr Shambhu Sharan was a renowned cardiologist. He dedicated his life to serving the people of his native district, Motihari. Dr Shambhu Sharan had established a small hospital, Sharan Hospital, in Motihari, but he always dreamt of his legacy being carried forward by his family. The people of Motihari didn’t have much choice to get the best medical service otherwise. He wanted his son, Dr Ashutosh, and daughter-in-law, Dr Jasbir, to do things differently and bring better medical care to the people of Motihari. Dr Shambhu Sharan told his son that while his legacy continues, he would like to see the two doctors from the family develop a brand of their own.
Respecting his sentiments, Dr Ashutosh and Dr Jasbir started a small 10-bed hospital named Sharan Clinic at Gyan Babu Chowk, Motihari, and never looked back. Dr Nikita Sharan, daughter and Radiologist, and son, Dr Nikhil Sharan, a laparoscopic surgeon now take the legacy forward.
The doctor couple is confident that their patients will benefit from Dr Nikita and Dr Nikhil Sharan’s
contributions. They are committed to making their hospital in Motihari set a milestone in the medical world of the state.
Childhood and Education
Born in October 1956 in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, Ashutosh Sharan did his early education at the famous St. Xavier’s School in Patna. After that, he enrolled in Gardnibagh High School in Patna, where he studied till class VI. On the advice of the family, Ashutosh moved to Bettiah. He enlisted in Christ Raza High School in seventh grade and passed the matriculation examination in 1971.
Life Partner
Remembering the old days, Dr Ashutosh Sharan says that he met Jasbir Kaur Sharan in the medical college, who was not only his classmate but was recognised as a meritorious student. Dr Sharan says that his growing closeness with Jasbir proved to be the turning point of his life. And in 1983 they got married. Dr Jasbir Kaur Sharan had passed the eleventh examination from the famous St. Joseph’s Convent High School in Patna and, in 1972, enrolled in Patna Science College. In 1973, she enrolled in Darbhanga Medical College, and in 1979, Dr Jasbir and Ashutosh completed their MBBS together.
Building a Career Together
The couple has single-handedly brought laurels to the medical world. They started a small clinic at Motihari’s Gyan Babu Chowk in 1985, which has left an indelible mark in the state’s medical world. The journey began at Darbhanga Medical College. Dr Ashutosh Sharan started training in General Surgery under the guidance of the renowned Dr Narendra Prasad at Patna Medical College and Hospital during the period 1982-84. At the same time, Dr Jasbir obtained an MD from Darbhanga Medical College. In 1983, Dr Ashutosh worked as an SDMO in MJK Hospital, Bettiah. Dr Ashutosh Sharan took study leave and completed PG from Patna Medical College and Hospital between 1982-84 and 1985. He immensely contributed to TB Hospital in Motihari by serving the poor patients.
In 1988, Dr Jasbir Kaur Sharan was working in the health department of the Bihar government and was appointed by the state government to the referral hospital in Laxmipur, Munger. Due to her husband’s posting in Motihari, she got the transfer in a year to Motihari’s Sadar. In Motihari Sadar Hospital she served for a long period. But she was transferred from Sadar Hospital in Motihari to MJK Government Hospital in Bettiah, where Jasbir worked till 2004-05 and took VRS.
Way Forward
Ashutosh Nursing Home was now ready to treat the patients of the district with a better option of multi-speciality services near the small Sharan Hospital established by the father. Dr Ashutosh and Dr Jasbir say that it is usually seen in a multi-speciality hospital that all types of diagnostic facilities are available under one roof. “But in our hospital, we have kept other facilities like Pathology, Chemist Shop, Ultrasound, etc. away from the hospital premises so that the patient can get the test done wherever they want,” the doctor couple said. Considering the better medical care, senior doctors of Patna also come to Motihari to provide their services.
Serving Society a Bit More
The couple joined the Lions Club of Motihari in 1982 with the intention of social service. Dr Ashutosh is currently the president of Lions Club, and Dr Jasbir is set to become the next president.
