I have a weird obsession with pouches, says Payal Singhal

The fashion designer reminisces even as she celebrates 25 years of being in the business

My personal style is: Quirky and comfortable. I like cool, interesting design features but I don’t like to be uncomfortable at all.

My personal style icon: Nicole Richie.

An item in my wardrobe that means a lot to me: That’s difficult as I have so many things that mean a lot to me for different reasons. There is this one Kavita Bhartia chiffon tube I bought form a store in Hong Kong in 2003, the year I got married and I wore it to my honeymoon in Bali. I don’t fit into it any more but I still have it. It was the first Indian designer piece I ever bought.

My favourite souvenir from my travels is: So a few years back we decided not to buy any souvenirs as we wanted to start to shop more mindfully. Now we just get a magnet from every city, town or village we visit. Our refrigerator is a shrine to these little memories.

The best gift I have received: My husband gave me a two-tone Rolex for my 40th birthday and helped me hunt all over the world for the one. I had always wanted but never actually seen one anywhere, and he found it for me at their Bond Street , London, store's vault. I wear it every day and cherish it. It’s more than just a watch or a Rolex to me it was the best gift he has ever given me.

The best gift I have given: That’s hard to say as that would be decided by the receiver. But I can safely say my son was the best gift I got and gave to myself and my family.

The last thing I bought: A checkered pant-suit by Do Takke from Curato.

The last book I read: I don’t read fiction anymore. But the little I do read, it's usually management books. I'm currently reading 'Business Sutra' by Devdutt Pattanaik.

The last film I loved: 'Laapataa Ladies' by Kiran Rao. It was such an incredibly sweet movie. It  kind of tells you in all the chaos you find strangers who are there for you like no one ever will.

My Spotify list would include these songs: 'Iris' by The Goo Goo Dolls; 'Neela Aasman So Gaya' by Amitabh Bachchan; Madonna's 'Like a Prayer', and 'People are Strange' by The Doors.

My beauty/wellness routine is: I do love skincare but, to be honest, all I really do is make sure I get all my make up off every day no matter what. And I hydrate my skin with a great water-based moisturiser and in the day. I always first moisturise then use my sunblock and then all the steps to make up. Even these basic steps have actually really

My favourite holiday destination: Provence. My husband, our son, and I did a summer in Provence a few years back and it has been our best trip so far. We loved everything from the lavender fields to the boutique hotels and restaurants, the beautiful long drives and quaint little villages. It was so charming and so rich in culture with big and small museums. We went to L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, Arles, Gordes, Avignon, Les Baux-de-Provence and so many more villages.

I love to collect: Pouches! It’s a weird obsession but I love all shapes, sizes and types of pouches. In my main handbag, I don’t have an organiser but fun pouches from all my travels for each item including a money pouch and not a wallet.

My fridge always has: Lots of hot sauces from all over the world. I love my food spicy and I leave no hot sauce store unturned.

Minimalism or maximalism: A minimal maximalism. I like one focal point that’s usually unique quirky or dramatic but I don’t like to overdo it like a Christmas tree.

My home looks like: A cosy space in contemporary Bohemian style. It's filled with things I collect from all over the world. I also use of lots of different textiles to create layers, and because I get bored of things easily.

My favourite mix of traditional and contemporary is: The work I do . And the current lot of music coming out of India.

My best ideas come when: I am in the shower. I didn’t realise this till just a few years back and then I started to notice that some of the best ideas and designs were coming to me when I was basically not able to multi-task and my mind was just blank focusing on the shower.

The best way to spend Rs 20,000 is: To give it to a a charity you really like or believe in. Trust me, this will give you more pleasure that an any meal or thing you can spend it on.

My idea of happiness is: Peace of mind. Love of my family and friends. Joy in everything I do.
