New Motor Vehicles Bill: Full list of new traffic violation fines

Stricter rules and increased penalties put in place to check traffic safety in India

With President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday gave assent to the the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2019, which will tighten road traffic regulations such as issuance of driving licence and impose stricter penalties for violations in an attempt to improve road safety.

Earlier this week, Parliament had given nod to the legislation. The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2019, received the assent of the President on August 9, 2019, an official notification said. As per the new law, stricter rules and increased penalties have been put in place to check traffic safety in the country.

Here are the major changes in penalties that will be effective soon: 

1. Not giving way to emergency vehicles: Rs 10,000 

2. Driving despite disqualification: Rs 10,000 

3. Aggregators (Uber/Ola) violating driving licence norms: up to Rs 1 lakh

4. Over-speeding: Rs 1,000- 2,000 

5. Driving without insurance: Rs 2,000 

6. Driving without helmets: Rs 1,000 and three-month suspension of licence

7. Road offence by juveniles: The guardian/owner to be deemed to be guilty with a penalty of Rs 25,000 and three years imprisonment and cancellation of registration of the vehicle

8. Traffic violations: Rs 500 instead of Rs 100 earlier

9. Disobedience of orders of authorities: minimum penalty of Rs 2,000 in place of Rs 500 earlier

10. Penalty for unauthorised use of vehicles without licence: Rs 5,000 

11. Driving without licence: Rs 5,000 

12. Dangerous driving: Rs 5,000, up from Rs 1,000

13. Drunken driving: Rs 10,000
