A Special CBI Court in Delhi has granted anticipatory bail to former Union minister P. Chidambaram and son Karti Chidambaram in the Aircel Maxis case. The court has, however, directed the the two to co-operate in the investigation.
The development comes as a breather for the Congress leader whose anticipatory bail plea seeking protection from ED arrest in the INX Media money laundering case was rejected by the Supreme Court on Thursday. Chidambaram has been in the CBI custody in the same case since August 21.
In the Aircel Maxis case, both Chidambaram and son Karti had called the probe motivated and moved anticipatory bail on the ground that their arrest was not required as they been cooperating with the investigation throughout. On the other hand, the CBI and ED had argued that the custodial interrogation of the father-son duo was necessary in the case as the investigation in the case was still ongoing.

All four applications were allowed in the Special CBI Court on Thursday.
Earlier in the day, both the CBI and ED had urged the court to defer the order citing the Supreme Court order that denied Chidambaram anticipatory bail. However, the request was declinedby Special judge O.P. Saini.
The Chidambarams are under the scanner of investigating agencies in the Aircel-Maxis deal as also the INX Media case involving Rs 305 crore.
