The good-old Bajaj Chetak makes an 'electric' return; price, booking details here

Bajaj Auto joins the league of Hero, Ather in the electric scooter market in India

Bajaj Auto's iconic Chetak has made a comeback in the electric form. Launching the electric scooter, Bajaj said the bookings will start from January 15 and the deliveries will commence from February end. 

The new Chetak comes at a starting price of Rs 1 lakh. To start with, the electric variant of the iconic Chetak will be available in Pune and Bengaluru, it said. Bajaj Auto had unveiled Chetak last October.

The electric scooter will be available in two variants, Urbane and Premium. The Chetak Urbane edition with Drum Brakes will be priced at Rs 1 lakh, while the Chetak Premium edition with disc brakes and luxury finish will be priced at Rs 1.15 lakh. Both prices are ex-showroom prices and inclusive of applicable subsidies, and exclusive of insurance and road tax, the company said.

Bajaj Auto claimed that Chetak needs minimal maintenance with a service interval of 12,000 kilometres or one year (whichever is earlier), and comes with an overall warranty of three years or 50,000 kilometres (whichever is earlier) inclusive of the Lithium-Ion battery.

Additionally, a home-charging station will be included in the package. Customers can book the vehicle online on the Chetak website at an initial amount of Rs 2,000.

With the launch of the Chetak, Bajaj Auto joins the league of Hero, Ather, et al in the electric scooter market in India. There has been a lot of activity in the electric vehicle segment in the country over the past couple of years. The electric scooters and motorcycles market is projected to reach $617.7 million by 2025, according to recent reports. Increasing pollution awareness among people and increasing government support in the form of subsidies are the key factors driving the growth of the market.
