India is a country that has been struck by the novel coronavirus outbreak, with over 120 million jobs lost as a result. It’s safe to say that the world, as we know it, will never be the same. But not all industries have been hit the same by COVID-19.
Some industries remain unchanged, while others come up with innovative solutions to ensure that jobs remain, despite social distancing and lockdowns.
Is 2020 Birthing a ‘New Normal’ for Cybersecurity?
As physical shops, supermarkets, and shopping malls close, more and more people reach for online solutions to their daily needs. Food order companies like Zomato and Swiggy have risen in popularity while other necessities are purchased using online services of local companies, or Amazon.
With an increase of online payments, purchases, and deliveries there’s also an increased security risk, especially for those companies who are hugely reliant on working and communicating online.
Hackers have been found to gain access to Zoom meetings and increase the number of Ransomware attacks carried out in the last six months. And last month, over 450 email addresses and passwords of WHO employees were leaked, as well as sensitive information on connected resources.
The request for people working with cybersecurity is therefore imminent, and experts say that the sector might be more immune to recession than other areas due to the significant demand.
This is becoming clear in India as the demand for cybersecurity grows larger than the available assets within the sector. Some of the job roles that are the most in-demand right now include Cybersecurity Analysts, Ethical Hackers, Cybersecurity Engineers, Cybersecurity Consultants, Pen Testers, Security Engineers, and Security Architects.
Amazon Opens 50,000 new Jobs due to Increasing Demand
Putting security-flaws aside, one company that is instantly affected by the new online demands of the world is Amazon. The company recently announced they are opening another 50,000 jobs in India to cope with the increased demand.
The jobs are seasonal, expected to run during the next couple of months, as Europe and the US enter the summer season. The roles vary, ranging from fulfillment centre-positions and delivery networks to part-time flex jobs for independent Amazon Flex-contractors.
Amazon themselves state that:
“The associates will join other thousands of associates across Amazon India’s fulfillment and delivery network and assist them to pick, pack, ship, and deliver customers’ orders more efficiently.”
The news of Amazon increasing the number of available positions comes as a relief for many Indians who lost their job due to the pandemic.
Akhil Saxena, VP, Customer Fulfilment Operations, APAC, MENA & LATAM at Amazon comments on this:
“One thing we’ve learned from the COVID-19 pandemic is how important a role Amazon and e-commerce can play for our customers as much as for small businesses and the economy. [...] We are creating work opportunities for close to 50,000 seasonal associates across our fulfillment and delivery network.”
Online Gambling: Leading the Tech-Way for Job-Seekers
Another sector that has been able to ‘keep its cool’ during these times is the online gambling industry.
Gambling is a popular past-time hobby for many Indians today, and thanks to quick turnaround and innovation, the industry has been able to keep offering gaming entertainment, despite some challenges.
Since live casino studios have had to close due to the novel coronavirus temporarily, providers have entered new cooperations with each other and launched never-before-seen gaming solutions that allow dealers to stream from the safety of their own home.
For job-seeking Indians, this may open up for new remote positions with these game providers, as the demand for new hybrid table-games increases.
Putting the current COVID-situation aside, independent sites such as SevenJackpots and Esse N Videri Media report that the industry sees an overall increase in focus on the Indian market.
Mattias Bergehed, Managing Director at Esse N Videri Media confirms: "We have noticed a steady increase in search volumes for local table games such as Andar Bahar and Teen Patti on Google.in."
At 10cric.com, the number of India-focused tables has increased, and some online casinos are offering tables with Hindi speaking dealers, as well as live Bollywood tables.
In other words, the demand for both English and Hindi speaking Indian natives is on the rise, and with remote work becoming the norm, careers within the casino sector become a possibility, even for Indian residents.
