Questt, an app that makes studying fun even while it uses data to help the process, and Shopsy, a hypervalue e-commerce app from Flipkart, are the big winners in tech giant Google’s selection of the best apps from India in 2022.
Shopsy won the User’s Choice App of 2022 award, from among the options available on Google PlayStore while Angry Birds Journey was the winner for best game of the year in the user’s choice section.
The Google Play winner of the best app 2022 (editor’s choice) was Questt, which uses artificial intelligence to personalise education, including the gamifying of the learning experience for students.
While Shopsy led the category of the best app for everyday essentials, the rise of ultra-fast delivery in 2022 saw an increase in the popularity of apps like Zepto (a Mumbai startup which promises 10-minute delivery of groceries) and BlinkIt (formerly called Grofer’s).
“Once again, we saw apps that helped people in numerous ways, including personal growth, daily tasks, creative expression and business aspirations,” said Google Play’s global director of merchandising John Mentgen in a blog post on Thursday afternoon.
“Many of these (apps) come from local developers in India that once again inspired us with their ambition and creativity, building winning solutions for India and the world,” he added.
Personal growth was a major focus of some of the apps that finished on top. This ranged from Filo, PrepLadder, CueMath and Yellow Class which provided quality content to make education interactive, gamified and with expert guidance, to apps like BunkerFit, Neend and Dance Workout for Weight Loss in the wellness space which offered creative and localised solutions to help people stay fit physically and mentally.
Unique app ideas from India also found takers this year. Khyaal, which helps senior citizens interact and support each other in their holistic care won the category for ‘Best App For Good’. Turnip, which helps people connect globally to stream content with like-minded others won the ‘Best App for Fun’ category, while Apex Legends Mobile won the ‘Best Game of the Year’ category ( Angry Birds Journey won the User’s Choice game award).
The best ‘Ongoing Games’ category saw desi favourites Ludo King and Real Cricket 20 on top, with ‘Clash of Clans’ the winner. Google’s blog also noted that parenting and pet parenting, in particular, were finding users. BabyG, which guides parents on the evolving needs of their infants and toddlers was the winner in the ‘Hidden Gems’ category, while PetPerfect, which provides information to owners to take care of their furry friends, was an honourable mention.
