Uber will launch in India Uber Green, its global option for booking an electric taxi. The taxi aggregator said the option to book specifically an electric car will be initially available in the metros of Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru.
Uber Green was launched globally two years ago and is presently available in 15 countries.
Uber aims to achieve a total of 25,000 electric cars in its fleet, but that will be in three years time or so.
Uber India head Prabhjeet Singh did warn that initially options will be limited. The company is set to hit a total of 6,500 EVs in its fleet this year, but that is a pan-Indian figure. The numbers for the three metros where it will start Uber Green will be way less.
The electric taxi market in India has seen great scaling up by the likes of Blu Smart. Uber, which had focused on tie-ups with mass transit operations like Delhi Metro and offering options like Uber Shuttle, would be late to the trend in the country.
The company also announced partnerships in its goal for going zero carbon in India by 2040, including with the likes of Tata Motors, Jio BP and Zypp.
“With these industry leading partnerships, we are matching commitment with action to help drivers go Electric faster,” said Singh.
