The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced that FASTags with incomplete Know Your Customer (KYC) details will be deactivated after January 31, 2024. This move is part of the
NHAI's efforts to enhance the efficiency of the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system and ensure seamless movement at toll plazas.
To avoid any inconvenience, FASTag users are strongly advised to complete the KYC process for their latest FASTag. This process should be done in accordance with the guidelines set by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Completing the KYC for FASTags is crucial to ensure that the account remains active and to prevent deactivation or blacklisting by banks .
'One Vehicle, One FASTag' Initiative
In addition to completing the KYC process, FASTag users are also encouraged to adhere to the 'One Vehicle, One FASTag' principle. This initiative aims to discourage the use of a single FASTag for multiple vehicles or linking multiple FASTags to a particular vehicle. Users should discard any previously issued FASTags through their respective banks.
The NHAI has implemented the 'One Vehicle, One FASTag' initiative in response to recent reports of malpractices. These include the issuance of multiple FASTags for a single vehicle and the distribution of FASTags without proper KYC, in violation of RBI mandates. Instances of FASTags intentionally not being affixed to the vehicle's windscreen have also been noted, causing unnecessary delays at toll plazas and inconveniencing fellow national highway users.
"Only the latest FASTag account shall remain active as previous tags will be deactivated/blacklisted after 31st January 2024," an official statement said.
FASTag has revolutionised the electronic toll collection system in India, with a penetration rate of approximately 98 percent and over 8 crore users The introduction of the 'One Vehicle, One FASTag' initiative is expected to further improve the efficiency of toll operations and ensure seamless and comfortable journeys.
For further assistance or queries, FASTag users can reach out to nearest toll plazas or toll-free customer care number of their respective issuer banks.
