Weak global cues drag Sensex, Nifty down from record levels

The US markets closed on a mixed note on Tuesday

Sensex and Nifty declined after rallying to new lifetime peaks on Wednesday mainly due to weak trends in the global market. The US markets closed on a mixed note on Tuesday while in Seoul, Tokyo and Shanghai markets were trading lower on Wednesday.

Though Sensex surged 129.72 points to claim a record high of 80,481.36 when the market opened, the 30-stock BSE benchmark index lowered 207.47 points to 80,144.17.

The broader Nifty index hit all-time high of 24,461.05 when the market opened but it dipped 49.6 points to 24,383.60.

Mahindra & Mahindra, JSW Steel, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Axis Bank, SBI and ICICI Bank were the major losers while Maruti, Adani Ports, NTPC and Bharti Airtel were top gainers.

Sensex on Tuesday ended on a new closing peak of 80,351.64 after zooming 391.26 points. Nifty also recorded a new closing high of 24,433.20.
