The Indian arm of Kia has recalled its EV6 SUVs in the country, impacting more than thousand units manufactured in 2022-23 due to a crash risk over potential loss of driving power.
According to Kia India, the recall was necessitated over a potential fault with the Integrated Charging Control Units (ICCU) of the EV6 electric SUVs across the globe. The fault in the ICCU could stop the charging of the 12-volt auxilliary battery, resulting in discharge while being on road and total loss of drive power.
However, the company said a software issue can resolve the issue and that it will contact the customers directly to resolve the issue. Customers can also reach out to Kia customer care or their nearest dealer to get their fuse inspected and replaced at free of cost, if needed. The software update is also being done for free.
In India, the recall will affect 1,138 models of the SUV that were manufactured between March 3, 2022 and April 14, 2023. In the US, more than 48,232 EV6 units have been recalled while Australia 3,948 were affected.
This comes after Hyundai announced a similar recall of 1,744 units of its Ioniq 5 EV manufactured between July 21, 2022, and April 30, 2024, due to an ICCU issue.
In May, Kia unveiled a facelift of its EV6 crossover globally with major improvements in the battery. It was fitted with an 84kWh unit which is 6.6kWh more than the earlier version. It supports 350kW DC fast charging, helping the car to get charged from 10 to 80 per cent in 18 minutes.
