Kochi wins award for most sustainable transport system

Bhubaneswar was declared winner in the ‘City with the Best Public Transport System’ category.

The Urban Mobility of India (UMI), under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, has announced awards for best practice projects in urban transport. 

While Kochi, the commercial hub of Kerala, bagged the award for the most sustainable transport system, Odisha’s capital Bhubaneswar was declared winner in the ‘City with Best Public Transport System’ category.

The Kochi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd and Bhubaneswar's Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT) were chosen for the awards.

Among other categories, Srinagar was announced as the city with the best non-motorised transport system while Gandhinagar in Gujarat was chosen for the ‘City with the Best Safety and Security System & Record’ award.

Surat, another city from Gujarat, won the award for ‘City with Best Intelligent Transport System’. While, the ‘City with the Most Innovative Financing Mechanism’ award went to Jammu.

Bengaluru bagged two awards—City with Best Record of Public Involvement in Transport and Metro Rail with the Best Multimodal Integration.

The ‘Metro Rail with the Best Passenger Services and Satisfaction’ award went to Mumbai.

The awards were announced at the 17th  Urban Mobility India Conference and Exhibition being held in Gandhinagar. 

Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal addressed the valedictory session of the three-day conference and said under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi India has come to the third position in the world in terms of operational rail network. 

“Very soon Indian Metro network shall become second largest,” he said.

The prime minister’s vision of One Nation One Card which is called National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) is now becoming a reality and most of the metros in India have adopted NCMC and this is going to be a game changer in Urban Mobility sector, the minister said.

Lal also announced Gurugram as the venue of the 18th conference.
