IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers said that the airline expects 2024 passenger count to be around 11.2 crore. This estimate is 12 per cent higher than the 10 crore passengers it carried in 2023.
The high-crowded and competitive aviation industry in India is led by IndiGo (operated by Interglobe Aviation) domestically, with a 63.6 per cent market share.
Elbers also told media that the company will welcome the new Airbus A321 XLRs in 2025. To increase its fleet of over 400 aircraft, IndiGo recently ordered 30 wide-body A350-900 planes.
"An airline so young expects to welcome over 112 million customers in 2024, after crossing the 100 million annual customers bar last year," said the IndiGo CEO.
On Tuesday, shares of Interglobe posted a 3.9 per cent gain, in what was the best trading session in four months.
IndiGo chief's remarks are in line with the latest data posted by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), where the aviation watchdog observed that Indian airlines carried 14.6 crore passengers from January to November 2024. This was almost a 12 per cent bump from the 12.8 crore passengers who flew a year ago for the same period.
DGCA also said that IndiGo topped the On Time Performance (OTP) of scheduled domestic airlines, with 74.5 per cent. New entrant Akasa Air was second with 66.4 per cent.
