The electric version of India's largest selling sports utility vehicle (SUV) is ready. In a statement Thursday afternoon, Hyundai India revealed that it is all set to launch an electric variant of the Creta soon.
The vehicle is expected to be unveiled at the Bharat Mobility Expo, the new, post-EV title of the erstwhile Auto Expo. Asia's biggest vehicle show, Bharat Mobility Expo, will be on across three expansive venues across the national capital region from January 18.
Since its launch in the mid-2010s, Creta went on to become India's biggest selling SUV with an estimated 11 lakh customers across its three combustion engine variants. Sort of the poster boy for Indian drivers' switch from small cars to bigger SUVs that has been playing out in the last few years, Hyundai hopes Creta EV will do the same for India's switch to electric four-wheelers in a big way.
"Creta Electric marks a significant milestone for Hyundai India as our first localised electric SUV," said Tarun Garg, Hyundai India COO. "Continuing its strong legacy of the Creta brand, the electric variant combines design, technology and exceptional safety to inspire confidence in electric vehicles among Indian customers."
"With this addition, we now have a Creta for everyone," he added.
Creta Electric will offer two battery packs. A 51.4 kWh (long range) battery offering 473 kms on a single charge, and a 42 kWh one offering 390 kms on a single charge. The company claims that the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in under an hour through DC charging, and from 10% to full charge through a regular home charging unit within four hours.
