A massive 32 per cent jump in yearly sales was not enough for Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India to surpass Hero MotoCorp in 2024 wholesale numbers. For the year, Honda sold 58.01 lakh two-wheelers. Meanwhile, Hero sold 59.11 lakh units, edging over its rival by at least a lakh more vehicles.
Honda, however, saw a 32 per cent jump in total yearly sales, while Hero saw a 7.5 per cent increase.
Hero MotoCorp was also helped by the electric scooter wave sweeping the country, with it selling 46,662 units of VIDA V1 e-scooters in 2024. Hero CEO Niranjan Gupta attributed the yearly sales growth to the company’s “125cc motorcycle segment and the evolving electric mobility portfolio”.
Gupta also outlined 2025 plans for the market leader, with new product launches including expansion of the EV portfolio and “further strengthening of premium portfolio and new scooter models in ICE segment”.
For Honda, December sales alone stood at 3.08 lakh units. For the year, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India sold 52.93 lakh units domestically and 5.08 lakh units through export, according to the company.
The Japanese giant, however, also sells cars in India under Honda Cars India Ltd. Honda Cars sold 20 per cent more units, or around 1.32 lakh cars, in 2024. Despite domestic sales taking a hit, exports more than doubled for the year, riding on the wave of Honda Elevate.
Last month, parent company Honda Motor Co announced its decision to merge with Nissan Motor Co, “integrating Nissan and Honda’s four-wheel-vehicle and Honda’s motorcycle and power products businesses” globally.
