Tata Motors has been the undisputed king of electric passenger vehicles in India, with a market share of around 62 per cent in 2024. But its dominance seems to be under threat as Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai India, Mahindra and JSW MG Motor India are all gearing up to take on Tata’s popular electric models.
JSW MG’s Windsor EV, the spacious tech-laden MPV launched in September 2024, was the company’s best seller in the last three months of the year. It sold around 10,000 units, which accounted for half of its total sales. JSW MG Motor India sold 21,464 EVs in 2024 (it has the Comet and the ZS eV, in addition to the Windsor), which was a 125 per cent increase from 2023.

Hyundai has already launched the electric Creta, which has inherited all good things from its much-loved ICE version. If priced rightly, it will be a formidable player in the space. While Hyundai already has a presence in the Indian EV market with the Kona and Ioniq 5 models, neither is for the mass market, unlike the Creta EV. Hyundai is accelerating the volume game with plans to launch at least three EVs that sit below the Creta soon.
Mahindra & Mahindra, which sold around 7,000 EVs in 2024—a 66 per cent increase from 2023—recently launched two head-turners—the XEV.9e and the BE.6e. Both SUVs are built on its modular, born-electric INGLO platform and come with locally produced battery packs. They look sharp and are powerful and feature-rich. While the BE.6e competes with the Tata Curvv, the XEV.9e will rival the upcoming Tata Harrier EV and Tata Safari EV.
Maruti-Suzuki, which has been waiting and watching, recently teased the production-ready e Vitara, its first electric compact SUV. It will be showcased at the Auto Expo. It will take on the Creta EV. India’s largest carmaker is expected to flex the muscle soon with more models.
Tata Motors is not shying away from the competition. It will soon be adding the Sierra EV and the Harrier EV to its robust line-up of five EVs (Nexon, Curvv, Punch, Tigor and Tiago).
