Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid down his vision of making India a global mobility hub, inaugurating the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in the national capital on Friday.
PM Modi also pointed out how his government was focused on electric mobility, calling on innovators and startups to find battery storage, EV technology et al using local resources and know-how, so that India can aim at becoming self-sufficient in the fast-growing area.
“Make in India, made for the world”, the PM reiterated, but this in context to building from ground up a local ecosystem for clean energy technologies and mobility in the country.
Modi pointed out how his government had always encouraged EV and clean mobility adoption. Ten years ago, only 2,600 EVs were sold in the country — today more than that get sold every day. Schemes like FAME (1&2) as well the new PM-DRIVE will provide further impetus to clean mobility adoption l, he said.
While talking about electric buses and the PM-ebus scheme, Modi pointed out how the Union government has got in 1,200 electric buses plying on the streets of the city, which goes to polls next month.
However, his bigger focus was on manufacturing and how PLI schemes and further FDI into the sector could have a multiplier effect—not just in spawning hundreds of thousands of jobs within the country directly as well as in auto ancillary sectors, the fresh investments and technology transfers, not to forget local innovation, could help in developing a complete auto manufacturing ecosystem in the country.
