Review of modernisation plans, ways to better India's defence capabilities on agenda for Joint Commanders’ Conference

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will review the defence preparedness and address the top-level military leadership

The two-day Joint Commanders’ Conference that begins on Wednesday will review the modernisation plans of the armed forces and deliberate on ways to boost India's defence capabilities through joint and enhanced synergy among the three Services.

The conference, with the theme ‘Sashakt aur Surakshit Bharat : Transforming the Armed Forces’, being held at Headquarters, Central Command in Lucknow, will be attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

On Thursday, the defence minister will review the defence preparedness and address the top-level military leadership.

“The conference will factor in the prevailing volatility in the regional and global environments to deduce plausible operational and employment scenarios, and simultaneously undertake threat and resource matching to develop a robust concept for future wars,” the defence ministry said in a statement.

Modernisation of armed forces: What does it involve

The modernisation plans for the defence forces— Army, Navy, and Air Force—are aimed at enhancing the defence capabilities of the country in response to the constantly evolving geopolitical challenges, particularly from neighboring countries such as China and Pakistan.

The plans focus on technological upgrades, indigenous production, and strategic reforms. It involves the acquisition of platforms, technologies and weapon systems and is a continuous process based on threat perception, operational necessities, and technological changes.

"Government attaches highest priority to ensure that the armed forces are sufficiently equipped to meet any operational requirement, which is achieved through induction of new equipment and technological upgradation of capabilities," the defence ministry had earlier said.
