In what comes as another right step toward gender inclusivity in armed forces in India, the Remount Veterinary Corps (RVC)—an administrative and operational branch of the Indian Army, that is responsible for breeding, rearing, and training of all animals used in the army—posted four women in forward areas.
They will be responsible for taking care of the Indian Army's animal assents which include dogs and equines (horses, mules).

Animals play a crucial role in transportation in tough and challenging terrains where vehicles cannot operate. “Dogs of different breeds, horses, camels, yak, and mules are the some of animals that are needed in military operations. Their uses may vary according to requirement and working capability depending on the region and climate of the area,” a study published in 'Uses of Animals in the Indian Military According to the Climatic Conditions', published on resmilitaris.net notes.
The government had approved Women Officers in RVC on March 01, 2023. The move by the Indian Army is part of the plans to include more women in different combat-supporting roles that are traditionally a men's domain.
About RVC
One of the oldest formations of the Indian Army, the Remount Veterinary Corps was raised in Bengal in 1779 as the 'Stud Department'.
Apart from breeding, procurement, rearing, training, and issue of trained army equines, the RVC also maintains liaison with national bodies on matters related to animal health, disease, and research.

"To develop and impart the skills of all aspects of veterinary sciences and animal care, veterinary public health and equestrian sports to meet the Tri-Service needs of the Armed forces as also to undertake technological exchange programme on scientific know–how with the environment for enhancing effectiveness, optimal production and efficient resource management," the mission statement of RVC reads.
