Iran unleashed a major offensive against Israel, launching nearly 200 ballistic missiles on Tuesday, in what the former claimed was a retaliatory action in response to the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and Revolutionary Guard General Abbas Nilforushan. An Israeli security official said most of the missiles were intercepted, though some managed to land, causing scattered damage and fires from falling shrapnel.
Two Arleigh Burke-class destroyers of the US, the USS Cole and USS Bulkeley, both deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean, helped Israel to defend against the missile attacks by Iran, by firing several interceptors at incoming Iranian ballistic missiles, the US claimed. Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said this action was part of the US promise to defend Israel.
Ryder said it is not known if those interceptors took down any of the missiles.
"Just like the last time, their intent is to cause destruction. And so, fortunately ... Israel has very significant air defense capabilities, and the U.S., of course, played a role in helping on that front as well."
Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin said he was proud of the skill and the bravery of the US troops who helped Israel against the assault by Iran and "who continue to support Israel's defense and to prevent a widening conflict or escalation."

The department maintains significant capability to defend our people, provide further support for Israel's self-defense, and deter further escalation, he added.
