Drone spotted near Kadamba Naval Base in Karnataka's Karwar; authorities on high alert: Report

An unidentified drone was reportedly spotted near INS Kadamba, also known as Naval Base Karwar or Project Seabird, in Karnataka

A drone was spotted near the Kadamba Naval Base in Karwar in Karnataka, leading to a heightened security alert in the area.

According to a report in the news portal Republic, the unidentified drone was seen flying at night over the boundary of the defence project area in Karwar.

INS Kadamba, also known as Naval Base Karwar or Project Seabird, is a crucial naval facility located near Karwar in Karnataka. It is India’s third largest operational naval base, after Mumbai and Visakhapatnam. The Indian Navy's aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya is based at the naval base in Karwar.

The image of the drone was reportedly captured on mobile phone by locals. Naval officers have viewed the footage of the drone submitted by them.

The drone is likely to be operated from a vehicle with a sunroof.

It is to be noted that drones are strictly prohibited near military installations as they are categorised as 'Red Zone'. The ministry of civil aviation, in its Drone Rules 2021 defines 'Red Zone' as thus: "'Red Zone' means the airspace of defined dimensions, above the land areas or territorial waters of India, or any installation or notified port limits specified by the Central Government beyond the territorial waters of India, within which unmanned aircraft system operations shall be permitted only by the Central Government.”

According to the Republic report, after the drone was spotted, intelligence agencies enhanced their search efforts.
