Even as it is waging war against an adversary with a highly sophisticated weapon system, and a highly trained force, Hamas is relying on quantity rather than quality to continue its warfare.
According to media reports, a large chunk of the arms of Hamas are of Russian, Chinese or Iranian origin.
According to a military expert, North Korean weapons and those produced in former Warsaw Pact countries are also present in the arsenal of Hamas.
Hamas has also been able to procure improvised rockets, small arms, mortars, anti-tank guided missiles, explosives, and shoulder-launched anti-aircraft missiles.
Philippines-based south Asian arms tracker and analyst Miguel Miranda said Hamas has a surplus of small arms and light weapons because of its own logistical efforts and Iran.
“There’s also an abundance of RPG-7s and their derivatives, such as the Chinese Type 69, thanks to Iran. Hamas propaganda has also shown they manufacture tandem warheads for their RPG-7s," he was quoted as saying.
Short-range rockets named the Qassams, after after the Hamas armed wing, forms much of its arsenal. Besides, the militant outfit also has rockets based on Russian and Iranian designs.
According to The Cipher Brief, the long-range rockets that Hamas possesses include M-75, R-160 rocket, also known as Khaibar-1 or M-302, J-80, which was developed in 2014.
The “Shahab” suicide drone of Hamas can linger near the target and detonate on impact. The arsenal also includes AK-47s, rocket-propelled grenades, long-range sniper rifles, and Iranian-made rifle Sayyad.
“We have locally manufactured rockets, but the long-range ones came from abroad, originating from Iran, Syria and other sources through Egypt,” late Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was quoted as saying last year.
