Indian Navy submarine accident: Captain of fishing boat that collided with INS Karanj booked

Following a complaint filed by a Navy officer, captain of a fishing boat that collided with Indian Navy submarine INS Karanj recently, has been booked

The captain of fishing boat FV Marthoma, which collided with Indian Navy submarine INS Karanj in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Goa recently, resulting in the death of two persons, has been booked in connection with the incident.

INS Karanj is the Indian Navy's third stealth Scorpene class submarine. The Scorpene submarines are one of the most advanced conventional submarines in the world.

A total of 11 people were injured in the collision which took place on November 21 some 70 nautical miles into the sea. The fishing boat had 13 crew members and 11 of them were rescued in the search operation.

While the submarine suffered damage of more than Rs 10 crore, the fishing boat tank.

On the complaint of a Navy officer, a case was registered at Mumbai's Yellow Gate police station against the boat's captain under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for causing death by rash and negligent act and endangering human life as well as other offences.

According to a Mumbai police official, further investigation into the case is underway.
