India's defence acquisition move: Sukhoi Su-30MKI, tanks, maritime security set for a major upgrade

The Defence Acquisition Council approved Rs 21,772 crore for key upgrades, including advanced EW systems for Su-30MKI, coastal security vessels, helicopters, and tank overhauls, boosting India’s defense and maritime capabilities

 The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), under the chairmanship Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, on Tuesday, granted Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for five capital acquisition proposals worth over Rs. 21,772 crore.

DAC granted AoN for procurement of 31 new water jet fast attack crafts (NWJFACs) for the Indian Navy, designed to perform low-intensity maritime operations, surveillance, patrol, and search and rescue operations close to the coast.

These vessels will also play a major role in anti-piracy missions, especially in and around the island territories.

DAC also granted AoN for procurement of 120 fast interceptor craft (FIC-1), capable of performing multiple roles, including escorting high-value units such as aircraft carriers, destroyers, and frigates, submarines for coastal defence.

AoN for procurement of the electronic warfare suite comprising external airborne self-protection jammer pods, next-generation radar warning receiver, and associated equipment for Sukhoi Su-30MKI aircraft was also accorded by the council. According to a defence ministry release, this system will enhance the operational capabilities of Su-30MKI and protect it from enemy radars and related weapon systems while carrying out a mission against enemy targets protected by air defence systems.

Besides, AoN was also accorded for the procurement of advanced light helicopters (ALH) M (MR) for the Indian Coast Guard to strengthen coastal security and surveillance.

It has also accorded approval for the overhaul of T-72 & T-90 tanks, BMP- and engines of Sukhoi fighter aircraft which will enhance the service life of these assets.
