China holds military drills near LAC ahead of Indian Army Day? Army Chief says situation along border sensitive but stable

China reportedly conducted a military drill near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) a few months after the total disengagement of troops in eastern Ladakh

Line of Actual Control (LAC)

Even as the military standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh ended with total disengagement of troops of both sides, and India and China began talks on restoration of bilateral ties, reports emerge that China conducted a military drill near LAC.

According to media reports, a regiment of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Xinjiang Military Command, which is part of the part of the broader Western Theater Command, conducted a drill in a high-altitude plateau area.

The drill reportedly involved advanced military technology, including all-terrain vehicles, drones, unmanned systems, and exoskeletons, and was designed to enhance the logistic support capabilities and war-readiness of the troops in extreme conditions in the region.

In view of the drill, Indian security forces have increased their alertness in the region. The drill comes a few days ahead of the Indian Army Day celebrations on January 15.

'There is still standoff'

Meanwhile, Army Chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi said on Monday that the situation along LAC is sensitive but stable.

Addressing a press conference ahead of the Army Day, Gen Dwivedi said there is still a degree of standoff in the region and efforts are needed to restore trust between the Indian and the Chinese militiaries.

The Army chief said patrolling and grazing in traditional areas have started in Depsang and Demchok, the two friction points from where the two sides have disengaged in October.

He further said India is focusing on boosting border infrastructure and capability development.
