Indian Army Chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi pushes for gender neutral approach in the Army

Over the years, the number of women in India's armed forces has increased, and according to Army Chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi, women officers are doing "exceedingly well"

The women power in India's tri-services is constantly on the rise with nearly 1,700 women officers set to join the Indian Army and other forces after the conclusion of their training, and there is a push for gender neutrality in the services.

Army Chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi, addressing a press conference ahead of the Army Day celebrations, assured that women officers are doing "exceedingly well" and added that if he has to have some yardstick, today there are approximately 16 officers who are doing staff college.

Over the years, the representation of women in the Indian Army and other services has increased, and various initiatives have been undertaken to enhance their roles and opportunities within the military.

"As far as Indian Army is concerned we want a strong women officer. So what it means, 'Kaali Mata Ka Roop', maybe... It means it has to be gender neutral approach in the conduct..."

He noted that the physical test parameters should nearly be the same but keeping in view the physical conditions there may be some kind of exceptions which will be made for women.

"Approximately 1,700 women officers are presently training in the Sainik schools, military schools.... So, it means that they will be coming to the Indian Army and tri-services. It is something that is to happen and will in the most mature way."
