Donald Trump reiterated his commitment to defend the country and also play the role of a peacemaker and "unifier" as he assumed charge as the Commander in Chief of the US forces.

The president of the US is the Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy and of the Militia of the several States.

"As commander in chief, I have no higher responsibility than to defend our country from threats and invasions, and that is exactly what I am going to do," Trump said during his inauguration address as the nation's 47th president.

America will soon be greater, stronger and far more exceptional than ever before, Trump said, and added that he is returning to presidency "confident and optimistic that we are at the start of a thrilling new era of national success."

"A tide of change is sweeping the country. Sunlight is pouring over the entire world, and America has the chance to seize this opportunity like never before."

We will measure our success not only by the battles we win, but also by the wars that we end, and perhaps most importantly, the wars we never get into, Trump said, adding, "My proudest legacy will be that of a peacemaker and unifier."

The statement of Trump calling himself to be a peacemaker could be in the context of the Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement in which he is said to have played a major role. Trump's designated Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, played a crucial role in the negotiations to bring an end to the conflict by convincing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accept the deal.
