In an indication of the strength of the #MeToo wave that has swept the United States, actor Kevin Spacey's latest film Billionaire Boys Club raked in a record low of $126 on its opening day. The total weekend collection, according to The Washington Post, stood at $618. The movie, ironically, revolved around a con man and a ponzi scheme. The contrast is stark—Spacey's earlier film Baby Driver had collected more than $20 million on its opening day.
Spacey, who has had a successful career in film, television and theater, is one of several big names in the entertainment business to be accused of sexual misconduct by people coming forward in the wake of allegations against movie producer Harvey Weinstein.
Spacey apologised to actor Anthony Rapp, who had accused him of trying to seduce him in 1986 when Rapp was 14. Eight current and former employees of Netflix's House of Cards, who were not identified, alleged sexual misconduct against Spacey.
The actor, as part of his apology to Rapp, announced he was gay, which angered many in the LGBT community and beyond who saw his announcement as an effort to divert attention from the accusation by Rapp.
Netflix had, later, severed ties with Kevin Spacey.
