Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma is known to speak his mind. The director who is currently working on the biopic of actor-politician NT Rama Rao, has showered praise on Mammootty's performance in Yatra. While congratulating director Mahi Raghav in a tweet, Varma lauded Mammootty for immortalising the legendary politician YSR.
Yatra is an awesome film ..A truly great insight into YSR,a truly great leader ..Kudos to @MahiVraghav who made him come alive and kudos to @mammukka for immortalising him forever 🙏🙏🙏

While Mammootty fans were quick to comment and thank Varma for his positive response, many pulled up Varma's old tweets in which he was critical of Malayalam superstars Mohanlal and Mammootty.
For instance, when Sunny Leone arrived in Kerala last year and brought traffic in Kochi to a standstill, Varma had tweeted that Mammootty and Mohanlal would cry out of jealousy because they couldn't draw such huge crowds.
Mammootty fans also reminded Varma of an old tweet where he likened Mammootty to a junior artiste and said he should learn acting from his son Dulquer Salman. “Mammootty's son will make Kerala proud in non-Kerala markets in just years, which Mammootty couldn't do for decades,” he had said.Â
