With several fan theories focussing on the in-universe clues to Game of Throne’s ending, a recent interview with series creator George R.R. Martin has revealed the ending of HBO’s popular fantasy drama.
“I like redheads. I’m married to a redhead. Therefore, it only seemed fair that the show’s remaining redheads be the ones who make it out alive at the end”, the author said.
While Martin’s final book is set to be released long after the series finale airs on television, the author had instructed the series directors D.W. Weiss and David Benioff of the final ending as early as the first season. Keeping this in mind, the TV show, which firmly diverged from the book’s canon in season five, has maintained a strong repertoire of redheaded characters who have survived despite the odds. This list includes Sansa Stark, Tormund Giantsbane and Ed Sheeran.
The revelation spells poorly for fans of Tyrion, who was long touted to be one of the final survivors. However, as keen watchers of the show have pointed out, Tyrion’s hair has been steadily transitioning from blonde to brown since the first season. There is a chance that his hair could turn red by the series finale, which would secure both his life and position in the finale.
Black-haired characters like Jon Snow have a zero chance of survival at present. However, while Daenerys is silver-haired, a red set of hair is not out of the question for her provided she gets access to red henna. Betting websites with stakes of death for different GoT endings have since adjusted the odds to accommodate characters who can potentially dye their hair.
Sources confirmed that the leaked interview was an April Fool’s story. However, the part about Martin’s wife being a redhead is true and she has threatened Martin with death if he kills her favourite characters.
