Although the movie is not exactly a sequel to the 2010 movie Pokkiri Raja, as the actor himself clarified in a recent event saying “One can't call Madhura Raja as a sequel to Pokkiri Raja but it's the character Raja that is returning with a different premise, with a different set of people, facing different situations,” the film is expected to offer all that the first movie offered and more—plenty of fun, action and thrill.

Meanwhile, Mammootty made an interesting comparison between Marvel's Avengers franchise and Madhura Raja during a recent promotional event. When the actor was asked if the people who enjoyed Pokkiri Raja would welcome Madhura Raja too as there could have been a lot of changes in the taste of cine goers over the years, Mammootty said human emotions and values don't change as time passes by. "This is a movie that sides with the good. It is a movie in which the good triumphs over evil. There has been franchise movies in the world for the past many years. How many Avengers movies have come out? You watch all Avengers movies without questioning. Then why do you ask such questions to this poor Raja," the actor said with a chuckle.
In a recent interview to The Hindu, the director of the movie, Vysakh, too had clarified that Madhura Raja is not a sequel, but an updated version of Pokkiri Raja. Dubbing the movie an “out-and-out entertainer, the director said most characters from Pokkiri Raja have been reprised in the movie.
While Tamil actor Jai plays a major role in the film, Bollywood actor Sunny Leone will be seen in a dance number. Others in the cast include Siddique, Anna Reshma Rajan, Salim Kumar, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Jagapathi Babu and Nedumudi Venu.
