A few days ago, there were media reports that said Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan refused to play the character of a Pakistani in a movie that was to be helmed by Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty, in the wake of the increased tension between India and Pakistan.

The reaction may not have prompted debates or attracted much reactions back home, but Pakistani actor Mehwish Hayat found the actor's decision 'disappointing' as she said movies do have the power to build bridges.

The actor took to Twitter to share her views. “ If true, this is very disappointing. Movies have the power to build bridges especially when tensions are high. I guess that in the end nationalism trumps everything - I hope that we can also take heed before we gush about all things Bollywood in future,” she tweeted.

Amitabh Bachchan was initially enthusiastic about the role when he had discussed the same with Resul Pookutty two years ago as the actor was impressed by the character and the message that the movie was offering. Bachchan, however, chose to say 'no' to the project as the relationship between India and Pakistan deteriorated in the wake of Pulwama attack which claimed the lives of over 40 paramilitary personnel.
