Vicky Kaushal looks intense as revolutionary Sardar Udham Singh

The first look of Bollywood actor Vicky Kaushal as firebrand revolutionary Sardar Udham Singh was out on Tuesday. With his hair set in place, Vicky Kaushal is seen dressed in an overcoat, on the streets of St Petersburg.

The biopic of Sardar Udham Singh is being directed by Shoojit Sircar. Set in the 1940s, the film will follow the life of Udham Singh who shoots Michael O' Dwyer, Lieutenant Governor of Punjab in British India, to avenge the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. 2019 marks 100 years of the massacre which happened on April 13, 1919. In the backdrop of the protests against the draconian Rowlatt Act, Brigadier General Reginald Dyer ordered his battalion to fire at over 2,000 people who were peacefully protesting at the Bagh. Even today, there is no clarity on the number of deaths

Udham Singh assassinated Dwyer on March 13, 1940, as the latter was scheduled to address a gathering at the Caxton Hall in London. On April 1, 1940 Udham Singh was formally charged with murder and hanged at Pentonville Prison on July 31, 1940. He was buried within the prison grounds. In 1974, Singh's remains were exhumed and repatriated to India.
