Deepika Padukone to play Draupadi in Mahabharata

The first part is expected to hit screens on Diwali in 2021

Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone has been roped in to play Draupadi in a reimagination of the Mahabharata. The film will look at the epic from the point of view of Draupadi.

Critic and industry analyst tweeted that she has teamed up with producer Madhu Mantena for the film which will be made in multiple parts. The first part is expected to hit screens on Diwali in 2021.

Speaking to Mid-Day about the project, Deepika said, "We all know the Mahabharat for its mythological tales and socio-cultural influence. We derive many of life’s lessons from the epic. But the narrative we are most familiar with is that of the epic’s leading men. This new perspective will be not only interesting but also significant.”

Deepika will next be seen in Chhapaak, in which she plays an acid attack survivor. She will also essay wife of former Indian cricket captain Kapil Dev, Romi Bhatia, in the film 83
