Legendary actor Soumitra Chatterjee passed away at a Kolkata hospital on Sunday. The 85-year-old was admitted to the hospital on October 6 after he tested positive for the novel coronavirus.
He later tested negative for the infection after which he was shifted to a non-COVID ITU. However, COVID- 19 encephalopathy set in and various other complications surfaced. Tracheostomy was successfully performed on the legendary actor recently.
His condition deteriorated on the night of November 13, and the doctors released a statement that his neurological condition was ‘the worst in the entire period of the stay’.
The actor was suffering from several co-morbidities including prostate cancer, for which he underwent treatment some years ago, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder. He had been admitted to hospital in August last year with severe pneumonia.
The critically acclaimed actor has the rare distinction of having worked with maestros Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Tapan Sinha and Tarun Mazumdar. Chatterjee, a Dada Saheb Phalke awardee, was the first Indian film personality to be conferred with the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, France's highest civilian award.
