Kangana Ranaut has announced that she will play former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in an upcoming film. She also shared a throwback picture from one of her old photoshoots, for which she had dressed up as the former PM.

Sharing the announcement on Twitter, Kangana wrote, "Happy to announce my dear friend Sai Kabir and I are collaborating on a political drama. Produced by Manikarnika Films. Written and Directed by Sai Kabir."

Speaking about dressing up as Indira Gandhi in the photo, she said: "This is a photoshoot about iconic women I did in the beginning of my career, little did I know one day I will get to play the iconic leader on screen."

Kangana said in a statement that the movie won’t be a biopic but will cover significant moments of Indian political history including Operation Blue Star and The Emergency. “Yes, we are working on the project, and the script is in the final stages. It is not the biopic of Indira Gandhi. It is a grand period film. To be precise, it is a political drama that will help my generation to understand (the) socio-political landscape of current India,” the actor said in a statement.

Kangana has movies like Dhaakad and Tejas in her kitty.

She will also be seen next in Thalaivi, biopic of former Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa.
