Sanjay Leela Bhansali's next film Gangubai Kathiawadi has landed in legal trouble with a Mumbai court issuing summons to the filmmaker, writers, and the lead actress Alia Bhatt over a defamation case.
The defamation case has been filed by Babu Ravji Shah, who claims to be the adopted son of Gangubai Kathiawadi, according to reports. The film is based on a chapter of Hussain Zaidi's book, Mafia Queens of Mumbai. The complainant had claimed that the film has shown his family in a wrong way and it is also factually incorrect.
The film features Alia in the titular role as Gangubai, one of the most powerful, loved and respected madams from Kamathipura, Mumbai's red-light area, during the 1960s. The film will open in the theatres countrywide on July 30.
The drama was earlier scheduled to arrive in theatres on September 11 in 2020 but was delayed to the coronavirus pandemic.
Bhansali is co-producing the film with producer Jayantilal Gada's Pen India Limited.
The shooting of the film had to be halted recently after Bhansali tested positive for COVID-19.
