Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi, satrring Alia Bhatt will release in theatres on January 6, 2022. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to Twitter to confirm the date.

The film has been adapted from one of the chapters of noted author Hussain Zaidi's book Mafia Queens of Mumbai. Gangubai Kathiawadi features Alia as Gangubai, one of the most powerful, loved and respected madams from Kamathipura during the 1960s. Bhansali is co-producing the film with producer Jayantilal Gada's Pen India Limited.
The film was earlier scheduled to release in theatres on July 30, but was postponed amid the second wave of COVID-19. Amid speculations of the film heading to OTT platform, the films’ producer had recently released a statement that the film will release in theatres.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday said cinema halls and drama theatres in the state will be permitted to operate from October 22. After this announcement, makers of a slew of big-ticket films have announced release dates.
