This is Rajamouli's second movie to win the prestigious award. In 2018, he had won the best international film award at the 44th edition of Saturn Awards for the second part of Baahubali franchise. Recalling the same, Rajamouli said, "This is the second Saturn Award for my films. The first one I won was for Baahubali: The Conlusion. I wish I was there in person but due to my prior commitments related to RRR release in Japan, I am unable to attend. I would like to congratulate all the other winners.”

RRR, starring Jr NTR and Ram Charan in the lead, and dubbed in Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada, had rave reviews in India and the West. The movie chronicles a pre-Independence story woven around two Indian revolutionaries in the 1920s—Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem. Bollywood actors Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn also play major roles in the movie.

Fans of the movie, who have been waiting for RRR Oscar chances, are certainly looking at this award as an indication of possible Academy accolades for the movie after RRR Oscar entry. There have been questions doing the round if RRR will win an Oscar ever since the RRR Oscar news emerged.
