Arun Govil is still remembered for essaying the role of Lord Ram in the television series Ramayan. In an exclusive interview with THE WEEK he talks about why certain boundaries must never be crossed in the name of creative liberty.

Have you watched Adipurush? If not, from where have you received feedback about it?

I have not watched the movie as yet. My feedback is from friends and the news.

When the Ramayan serial was telecast, such was its popularity that streets would empty out during its broadcast. It enjoys great popularity even today. What do you think is the reason for that?

This is a nation dominated by feelings. Our traditions and culture make us better humans. Sri Ram is at its core, and so deep is the connect that everyone in the society is eager to have his darshan (sighting). People of all ages go to the temple. When the serial Ramayan was telecast, every home would turn into a temple. Very recently during COVID-19 crores of people watched the serial again. Its popularity is not a matter of chance. It is the essence of this nation.

Do you subscribe to the explanation (given by the film’s makers) that such language has been used which can be easily understood by people?

As far as the film’s dialogues go, I do not like such language and I always use respectful language. I do not support the kind of language used in the film. In addition, drawing inspiration from Hollywood and presenting the film like a cartoon cannot be digested. As far as research for the film is concerned, the makers have taken creative liberties. However to put in their own new inputs is incorrect.

Does today’s generation have a more limited understanding of language and thus language has to be over simplified?

This is completely wrong. The simplicity of dialogues in the past is well known. Hindi has a wide reach and understanding today. The aim in making historical, cultural and religious movies should be that the audience learn to live a life of value and respect.

Is the audience of today also responsible for such movies?

The audience distinguishes between right and wrong after watching a movie. It should introspect on the nature of what is being offered to them.

What advice do you have for films that have a religious or spiritual background?

Deep research should go into the making of such films. The serial Ramayan was made after deep research into the Ramayan of various languages, penned by different authors. It was filmed with complete respect. Only when films are made with extensive research and respect will they be worthy of emulation by the audience. No one has the right to hurt religious feelings.

Is there a message that you have for film audiences?

Get entertained but not at the cost of your culture and traditions. Never compromise on your maryada (respect).
