Kaala Paani, Netflix's survival drama series featuring Mona Singh and Ashutosh Gowariker, has been renewed for a second season. The move comes after the narrative and performances in the first season garnered positive reviews from both critics and the audience.
The streaming giant took to social media to confirm the second season of the show set in the Andaman and Nicobar islands. Netflix also shared a recap video featuring key moments from the first season. Set in the year 2027, the first season revolved around the outbreak of a mysterious illness in the islands, and how a festival turns into a superspreader event.
Triggering memories of the Covid-19 pandemic, season one captures the fear and chaos that follow after the illness starts claiming more lives and a cure is yet to be found.
At the heart of the narrative is an indigenous tribe—the Orakas—who predicted the pandemic and are immune to bacteria causing it. Kaala Paani explored the power dynamics at play when a tough situation calls for tough decisions from the administrators, and also shed light on the state of indigenous people, their harmonious relationship with nature and how human greed impacts their lives.
Written by Biswapati Sarkar, the series was directed by Sameer Saxena and Amit Golani. Besides Singh and Gowariker, the show featured Sukant Goel, Amey Wagh, Arushi Sharma, Vikas Kumar and Radhika Mehrotra.
