Director Karan Johar, at a recent event, said, Animal starring Ranbir Kapoor is the 'best movie of 2023' and said the movie is a game changer, calling it genius. Johar was seated next to the director of the movie Sandeep Reddy Vanga at the Mega Pan India Roundtable 2023.
“This is not an average-thinking mind. This is the mind of someone who is so distinct, so individualistic that I was blown away. I saw the film twice, first as an audience member and second to study it. I think the success and acceptance of Animal is game-changing. The conviction is something that I want to have,” he said. The movie, which has been criticised for its portrayal of the toxic alpha male, has Ranbir Kapoor plays a dark, intense character with a complicated relationship with his father, played by Anil Kapoor.
Johar, whose last movie was Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, said, people have told him the movie was like a vaccination for Animal. Animal grossed over Rs 500 crore at the box office. Johar also said he liked Vanga Reddy's movie Kabir Singh, which also came under the scanner for the portrayal of a male chauvinist character.
“Suddenly you have an interval block where the hero is getting bashed up and everyone's singing a song... I am like, 'Where have you seen a sequence like this?' It's genius,” Johar further said, praising the movie.
Other participants in the round table included Rani Mukerji, Taapsee Pannu, Prithvi Konanur, Jude Anthany Joseph, and Rima Das. Johar also said that he cried while watching Animal and said he watched it twice.
