Mexican-American actor Adan Canto passed away on January 8. The 42-year-old had appendiceal cancer. Canto, who started at 16 as an aspiring musician, went on to star in series like Homeland and Mixology.

He also starred as Minister Lara in Narcos and appeared in episodes of Blood and Oil. His last role was in the series, Cleaning Lady. Canto was born in 1981 in Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila, Mexico and raised in Texas.

After doing a few local commercials and television shows, his first prominent role was in The Following, a Fox drama series. He has also starred in movies like X-Men: Days of Future Past, 2 Hearts and Bruised, which was directed by Halle Berry.

Canto is survived by his wife Stephanie Ann Canto and two children. Berry, in an Instagram post, grieved the actor's passing. “I don’t have the words just yet…. but my dear sweet friend Adan just gained his wings. Forever, forever in my heart,” she wrote. Canto has also written music for several Mexican television shows and movies, before making it as an actor.

Grieving Canto, Kiefer Sutherland wrote, “It seems lately I have had to make too many posts like this one, but I am heartbroken by the loss of Adan Canto. He was such a wonderful spirit. As an actor his desire to do well, to be great, and then do better, was truly impressive and he will be greatly missed. I am also heartbroken for his wife, Steph and his two young children. Adan, may you rest in peace.”
