Crime documentary 'American Nightmare' will arrive on January 17

The third week of January brings an exciting array of releases on various streaming platforms. Here is a quick look at movies and shows releasing this week:

1. American Nightmare

Release date: Jan 17

The true docu-crime series looks at the life of a couple named Denise and Aaron. He calls 911 to report that Denise has been kidnapped, a day after they faced a harrowing home invasion. Things get twisty when they are accused of staging the crime, and Denise walks in. She reappears in the docuseries, eight years after the incident.

2. Indian Police force

Directed by Rohit Shetty, this Hindi action thriller features an ensemble cast including Sidharth Malhotra and Shilpa Shetty Kundra. The series explores a fictional cop universe, tackling crime and justice while providing insight into the lives of dedicated police officers.

3. Cristóbal Balenciaga

Release date: Jan 19

Streaming platform: Disney + Hotstar

It is a biographical series chronicling the life of renowned fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga. Portrayed by Alberto San Juan and directed by award-winning filmmakers Aitor Arregi, Jon Garaño, and Jose Mari Goenaga, the series traces Balenciaga's journey from humble beginnings to a world-class designer.

4. The Marvels

Release date: Jan 16

Streaming platform: Disney + Hotstar

The 33rd movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a continuation of the 2022 miniseries "Ms. Marvel" and sequel to "Captain Marvel" (2019). After regaining her identity from Kree, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel teams up with Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau to save the universe. The theatrical release was in November 2023.

5. The Kitchen  

Release date: Jan 19

Streaming platform: Netflix

Set in a dystopian future London, "The Kitchen" on Netflix follows Izi and Benji, residents of The Kitchen, a defiant slum community amid the absence of social housing. The movie is directed by Kibwe Tavares and Daniel Kaluuya. Kane Robinson plays the role as Izi and Jedaiah Bannerman as Benji.

6. The Bequeathed

Release date: Jan 19

Streaming platform: Netflix

This South Korean Netflix thriller revolves around a girl inheriting a burial ground, leading her into a web of murders and secrets. It is directed by Min Hong-nam.

7. Joe

Release date: Jan 15

Streaming platform: Disney + Hotstar

Tamil romantic drama, "Joe", written and directed by Hariharan Ram S., narrates the tale of a young man experiencing love and heartbreak with his college mate. Starring Rio Raj and Malavika Manoj, among others, the film hit theatres on November 24, 2023.
