Indian fusion band Shakti, featuring Zakir Hussain and Shankar Mahadevan bagged the Global Music Album award at Grammy Awards 2024 in Los Angeles on Sunday night. The band, which also features John McLaughlin, percussionist V Selvaganesh, and violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan won for the album This Moment.
The band was formed in 1973, soon after the jazz fusion band Mahavishnu Orchestra, which was formed in 1971 disbanded. The band toured fairly extensively between 1975 and 1977.
The band split up in 1978 and was reformed in 2020. In 1997, for a short while, Zakir Hussain and John McLaughlin formed a band, 'Remember Shakti'. In June 2023 it released the album 'This Moment'. The album contains eight tracks including Shrini's Dream, Bending the Rules, Karuna, Giriraj Sudha, Mohanam and Las Palmas.
On winning the Grammy, Shankar Mahadevan said, “Thank you, boys!" He also expressed his gratitude to their families, friends and God. He dedicated the award to his wife. And added that India has their utmost admiration.
