Late 'Dangal' star Suhani Bhatnagar suffered from dermatomyositis, say parents | 5 Points

Suhani's father said swellings started appearing on her daughter's hand 2 months ago

Bollywood fans were shocked by the passing of actor Suhani Bhatnagar, who played young Babita Phogat in Aamir Khan-starrer wresting drama "Dangal." The young star was only 19.

The Faridabad resident became a people's favourite after appearing in the 2016 biographical drama about a wrestler who mentors his two daughters to success.

Manwhile, Suhani Bhatnagar's parents reportedly spoke to the media on Saturday. Despite the difficult circumstances, they spoke about their daughter's demise due to a very rare disease called dermatomyositis. Here is what we know so far following the media interaction of the late actor's family.

1. Suhani Bhatnagar was bedridden for the last 2 months. She breathed her last on February 16 evening, Friday and mortal remains were cremated on Saturday, her family confirmed to media.

2. Suhani's father reportedly said swellings started appearing on her hand a couple of months ago. Soon, it spread to the other hand and then her entire body. Despite consulting several doctors, none could identify the disease. Last Tuesday, Suhani was admitted to AIIMS when her condition deteriorated further.

3. When tests were carried out, the AIIMS team learnt that Suhani was suffering from the very rare 'Dermatomyositis' disease.

4. "The only treatment for this disease is steroids. After which he was given steroids, due to which the autoimmune system of his body was affected and the immunity became weak," AajTak quoted him as saying.

5. Suhani's father elaborated that the doctors said it takes a lot of time to recover from dermatomyositis. However, a weakened immunity resulted in Suhani getting infected in the hospital. Her lungs got filled with water (fluid accumulation) causing breathing difficulties, AajTak reported Suhani's father as saying.
