Actor Vijay reacts to Kallakurichi tragedy; calls it 'shocking and heartbreaking'

Reacting to the death of as many as 34 people after consuming spurious alcohol in Kallakurichi district of Tamil Nadu, popular actor Vijay lashed out at the government, calling it indifferent.

The news of the death of more than 25 people after consuming fake liquor in Karunapuram area of ​​Kallakurichi district is shocking and heartbreaking, Vijay said in a social media post in Tamil.

The actor offered condolences to the families of the deceased and said he is praying to god for the speedy recovery of those undergoing treatment.

Vijay, who is also the founder of the political party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, blamed the negligence of the government for the incident and demanded that 'tough' precautionary measures should be taken to prevent recurrence.

"The fact that such an incident has occurred again shows the indifference of the government administration when it has not yet fully recovered from the tragedy of losing many lives due to the same incident last year," Vijay said in a tweet.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu Legislative assembly on Thursday paid tributes to the victims who died after consuming spurious liquor in Kallakurichi.

Expressing shock over the deaths in the illicit liquor consumption case, Speaker M. Appavu said the state government was taking steps to contain the sale of spurious liquor and following the incident, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin initiated steps to provide medical treatment to the affected.
