Fantasy action drama Kalki 2898 AD, directed by Nag Ashwin, registered a record opening at the global box office, gaining Rs 191.5 crore gross on day one of its release.

The makers of Kalki 2898 AD, Vyjayanthi Movies, shared the opening day figure of the movie on its official X page through a poster, stating that the movie earned Rs 191.5 crore in gross box office collection (GBOC).

Kalki 2898 AD's day one earnings is the third-highest opening day collection for any Indian film. The movie is behind S.S. Rajamouli's RRR (Rs 223 crore) and Baahubali 2 (Rs 217 crore).

Touted as a marriage of Hindu epic Mahabharata and science fiction, Kalki 2898 AD was released on Thursday in six languages—Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi and English.

Kalki 2898 AD features a star cast led by Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Disha Patani, Saswata Chatterjee and Shobhana.

Kalki 2898 AD is arguably the most expensive feature film in Indian cinema history at a reported budget of Rs 600 crore.

Actor-director-producer Kamal Haasan had recently said he had agreed to do the film as he found Kalki's storyline very interesting.

"I prefer not to act in mythology films, as I would rather be among the humans. But I found Kalki's storyline very interesting," said the actor, adding that his role in the film is just a drop in the huge Kalki universe.

Kamal Haasan also said the film will appeal to everyone's inner child.

"I think the film has been made keeping the children in mind. Even the songs were picturised differently and I am happy that I have also been a part of the film," said the actor.
