Here's a major reason for Dexter fans to cheer! Dexter Morgan may be long dead, as the sequel Dexter: New Blood ended with the character's death. But now, the makers are back with a prequel to the series, titled Dexter: Original Sin.

Dexter: Original Sin intends to explore the formative years of Dexter Morgan. The upcoming prequel promise to offer a deeper understanding of the events and persons that formed him into the complex, and morally ambiguous serial killer that Dexter was.

The show is expected to focus on the teenage years of Dexter Morgan, and his relationship with his adoptive father Harry Morgan, who plays a major role in identifying his criminal tendencies and channeling them in a more (arguably) useful way.

Dexter: Original Sin is also expected to explore the psychological and moral struggles of Dexter as he comes to terms with his "Dark Passenger" and how he learns to control and channel his urges.

While the filming has started on June 5, Showtime and Paramount+ are yet to reveal when the show will aired.

Christian Slater will essay the role of Harry Morgan in the show, while Patrick Gibson will play the young Dexter Morgan in Dexter: Original Sin, which is set 15 years prior to the events that begin in Dexter. Sarah Michelle Gellar will play the CSI chief at the Miami Metro Police Department.

An official description of Dexter: Original Sin reads: “Set in 1991 Miami, Dexter: Original Sin follows Dexter as he transitions from student to avenging serial killer. When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness. With the guidance of his father, Harry (Slater), he adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcement’s radar. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.”

Dexter, which premiered in 2006 and ran for eight seasons captivated audiences with its unique blend of crime drama, dark humor, and psychological thriller elements. Michael C. Hall's portrayal of a forensic blood spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department who moonlights as a serial killer with a strict code was an instant hit among lovers of crime drama.
